Endings and New Beginnings

This week some units came to an end and others have only begun. We finished Topic 2 and we're almost finished with our narratives. Next week we will finish our narratives, English Unit 1: The Sentence, and Science Unit 1. After we finish those units we will begin realistic fiction in Writing, Nouns in English, and Communities Around Us in Social Studies.

Reminders
  • Monday, October 6th: Awareness Week begins
  • Wednesday, October 8th: Wear Blue
  • Friday, October 10th: No School

This Week
Reading: Now that everyone is on their "Just Right" reading level we can begin reading in guided reading groups. We also began using raz-kids to develop our reading abilities.

Writing: We put the finishing touches on our narratives and will publish them shortly.

Math: We finished Topic 2: Adding Whole Numbers. After finishing Topic 2 we reviewed and assessed all we learned. Today we began Topic 3: Subtraction Number Sense.

Science: We learned that invertebrates can be classified into different groups and we began learning about endangered species, extinct species, and fossils.

Art: After learning about fossils we talked about artifacts we could bury that would teach people in the future about us. We then started to create archaeology watercolor reliefs.

Next Week
Reading: We will continue learning about characters and review many of the strategies we learned this week. We will also continue reading in our guided reading groups.

Writing: We will publish our narratives and begin Realistic Fiction.

Math: We will continue Topic 3: Subtraction Number Sense. We will learn how to subtract by using a hundreds chart, mental math, and estimating. We will also learn how to problem solve by checking for reasonableness.

Art: We will finish our archaeology watercolor reliefs. After finishing our watercolor reliefs we will learn about background, middle ground, and foreground. Students will support their learning by developing a piece of artwork with different stages of the animal or plant life cycle in the background, middle ground, and foreground.
